Expenditure on drugs is generally second only to expenditure on staff, and so an efficient system for monitoring the supply, storage and administration of drugs is critical. After the user enters the details of an order, the system generates the ‘order documents’ for the selected supplier: the subsequent delivery/deliveries can then be allocated to specified locations (fridge, cupboard, controlled drug cabinet, GP bag etc.). With the expiry dates having been recorded, the Practice Manager can be alerted by the system to any drug stock reaching its expiry date so that this can be disposed of and replaced in good time.

By entering the details of prescriptions sent to the PPA, the F34D and annex can easily be generated, and the total reimbursement due two months hence is calculated immediately – allowing for accurate budgeting and reconciliation. In addition, the numbers of each drug/appliance claimed can be compared with the numbers purchased, so that an effective stock control system is provided.
